Calcium hypochlorite-the Effective material 8
Calcium hypochlorite is an inorganic compound.
Molecular formula: Ca (ClO) ₂,
Molecular weight: 142.98
Melting point: 100 ℃
Density: 2.35g/cm3
Refractive index: 1.545
Appearance: White powder
Solubility: soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol

The preparation of calcium hypochlorite mainly includes two processes: calcium method and sodium method:
The calcium method is to first calcine limestone to produce quicklime, then obtain hydrated lime, and then introduce chlorine gas into the chlorination tower for reaction;
The sodium method is to first digest calcium oxide and then react it with chlorine gas and caustic soda separately. The reaction solution is then separated by salt precipitation and dried.
Calcium hypochlorite contains 99% effective chlorine and has a bleaching ability almost equivalent to pure chlorine. It is commonly used as a bleaching agent and disinfectant for domestic water, and can also be used to eliminate military toxic gases.
Calcium hypochlorite has two important and common industrial products, namely bleaching powder and bleaching powder concentrate.
Bleach powder generally contains about 35% effective chlorine and is mainly used for bleaching pulp, silk, cotton, and fibers. It is also used for disinfection and sterilization of drinking water.
Bleach powder, also known as high-efficiency bleaching powder, has an effective chlorine content of generally 60-75%. As an efficient bleaching agent, it is mainly used for bleaching cotton fabrics, chemical fibers, and paper, as well as for bleaching and disinfecting starch, silk and gauze, and drinking water.
Application areas of calcium hypochlorite:
Used for disinfecting drinking water, wastewater, and industrial water systems.

- Swimming Pool Disinfection
Commonly used as a chlorine source to keep pool water clean and bacteria-free.

- Public Sanitation and Hygiene
Used for disinfecting hospitals, schools, hotels, and public facilities.
- Food and Beverage Industry
Used to sanitize equipment, surfaces, and containers in food processing plants.
- Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
Used to disinfect animal housing, poultry farms, and irrigation water.
- Textile and Paper Industry
Used as a bleaching agent for fabrics and paper pulp.

- Household Cleaning Products
Found in disinfectant powders and cleaning agents for domestic use.
- Marine and Fishery Applications
Used to disinfect aquaculture water and control bacterial growth.

- Emergency Epidemic Control
Used for large-scale disinfection during outbreaks of infectious diseases.
- Industrial Oxidizing Agent
Sometimes used in chemical synthesis as a strong oxidizing agent.
